2023 MSU NatSci Outstanding Alumni Award

Dr. Bryan Buckley

Drew Scholars became my tribe while at MSU. You don't just get a degree from MSU, you gain a family.

Dr. Bryan O. Buckley

Drew Scholars alumnus, Dr. Bryan O. Buckley, was the recipient of 2023 MSU College of Natural Science Outstanding Alumni Award.

Dr. Buckley came to MSU from Silver Springs, Maryland. He is a first-generation American citizen with immigrant parents from Antigua & Barbuda.  His family and culture are very important to him and have played a huge part in who he has become.

As an undergraduate, in addition to his membership and commitment to Drew Scholars, he maintained involvement with the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the Associated Students of MSU (ASMSU).  He graduated from MSU in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Natural Science.

After completing his baccalaureate degree, he matriculated to MSU College of Human Medicine, where he completed his Master of Public Health.  The next point in his academic journey was as a graduate student at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he earned his Doctor of Public Health.

Currently, Dr. Buckley is the Director for Health Equity Initiatives at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), where he supports NCQA’s Health Equity strategy across multiple departments to better integrate health equity concepts into existing programs and projects.  Bryan approaches leadership with a health-equity and systems-oriented lens and has over ten years of success applying performance improvement, leadership, and change management strategies across both the public health and healthcare sectors.

Dr. Buckley has a lengthy history in community involvement, serving in leadership in the American Public Health Association, American Heart Association, and on the Advisory Board for the Michigan State University & Grand Valley State University MPH programs. In Michigan, he served as a Board Member and Policy Chair of the Michigan Public Health Association.

One of Dr. Buckley's proudest public health initiatives was as an member of the inaugural Tobacco-Free Taskforce that worked with Michigan State University to transition campus to a tobacco and smoke-free campus.  On August 15, 2016, MSU implemented the policy as a result of the work of Dr. Buckley and other taskforce members.

The MSU College of Natural Science recognizes recipients of the Outstanding Alumni Award for their professional achievement and support of MSU or the College, and exemplifies MSU commitment to service.  Since Dr. Buckley's undergraduate tenure, he has maintained his commitment and generosity to MSU. NatSci, and Drew Scholars. His significant and exemplary contributions to the public health field and profession, and his community involvement show that he is Spartan Strong and very deserving of the Outstanding Alumni Award.

Congratulations Dr. Bryan Buckley
